Driving cost optimization at scale

Datadog runs complex infrastructure on AWS across multiple regions with demanding resiliency requirements. At our scale, we constantly make difficult trade-offs: cost savings vs performance and resiliency.

In 2023, we set a goal to migrate 100% of our AWS workloads to Graviton. Arm processors demonstrated better cost to performance than our existing fleet for many workloads, and Graviton was available in sustainable quantities.

This talk is about how in a year we used Datadog to enable a small team to successfully migrate a large scale infrastructure to a new hardware platform, gained massive efficiencies and added some key strategic capabilities.
